BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES

The Nihon University Population Research Institute (NUPRl) was established in April 1979 on the inspiration of Dr. Toshio Kuroda, its founder and first director. As stated in its charter, NUPRI aims to conduct top quality population-related studies intended to help solve population problems, especially in the developing countries of Asia and the Pacific. Since its foundation, NUPRI has been actively engaged in a variety of research projects. Areas of focus have included population distribution and migration, family structure and formation, and population aging and economic development. This latter area is considered to be the most significant issue facing Japanese society today, engendering a wide range of problems for which effective solutions must be sought. NUPRI continues to compile population projections at regular intervals, which provide useful data on the aging society in Japan. Committed to the challenge presented by the rapidly aging society, NUPRI recognizes its implications not only for the future of Japan, but for the rapidly developing countries of Asia as a whole. NUPRl's experience in the field of population projections will make an important contribution to the search for solutions to the problems which will be encountered in the future aging societies of Japan's Asian neighbors.
