学習目標(到達目標) 1. Students will obtain understanding of Japan's changing family organization and issues pertaining to family formation and dissolution.
2. Student will gain insight into how and what direction Japanese families will be shifting in the future.
授業概要(教育目的) The aim of this course is to examine the distinctive features of family life in contemporary Japan.

第2回History of Japanese families (1)Will review the prewar "ie" system.

Review your notes from the previous lesson. If anything is unclear to you, please do not hesitate to ask the instructor. You are expected to do the same for each lesson.
第3回History of Japanese families(2)Will exmine postwar socioeonomic changes relevant to family life.
第4回History of Japanese families(3)Will analyze the characteristics of "modern" Japanese families.
第5回Families during the high economic growth(1) Will examine the relationship between family life and the Japanese employment system.
第6回Families during the high economic growth(2)Will examine the characteristics of the "salarymen-housewife" system.
第7回Families during the high economic growth(3)Will analyze the "salarymen-housewife" system in relation to public policies and the welfare system.
第8回Families in transition(1)Will relate changing family life to the shift in the labor market.

授業形式 Attention will be given to ensure a good mix of lecture by the instructor and class discussion. Students will be given ample opportunities to express their ideas in English. Students will also be given an opportunity to conduct small research in a group and present materials in the class.
