学習目標(到達目標) From this lecture, students will learn basic theories and methods for analyzing economic statistics of Japan and other countries, and acquire practical skills for data analysis and presentation using EXCEL.
この科目では，経済統計の基本的な理論・手法を英語で学び，英語での分析資料作成の能力及びEXCELを基礎とした統計分析スキルを習得します。
授業概要(教育目的) This lecture mainly covers descriptive statistics through interpretation of real examples of economic statistics of Japan and the world.
この講義では，主として記述統計の基礎的な理論と方法を，日本と世界の経済統計の事例やそれを用いた演習を通じて英語で学びます。

回項目内容
第1回IntroductionOutline and contents of the course will be explained. Students will study basic concepts of descriptive statistics and the framework of economic statistics.
第2回Statistical DatabasesExamples of economic statistics are given, and students are to discuss interpretations. Students will learn how to access a wide range of economic statistics through international and national statistical databases.
第3回Basics of NumeracyBasic concepts such as percentages, averages, etc. will be explained, and effective ways to use them will be discussed.
第4回Drawing Graphs
Different kinds of graphs are introduced, and students will study appropriate ways to use them for visualizing the data.
第5回Analyzing distributions (1)Histograms and basic measures for expressing characteristics of distributions will be introduced, and students will study how to use them properly.
第6回Analyzing distributions (2)Methods for describing inequality of distribution will be explained, such as Lorentz curve and Gini coefficients, and students will practice using them in the exercises.
第7回Analyzing bivariate data (1)Basic methods and measures for analyzing bivariate data, such as scattergrams and correlation efficients will be explained, and students will practice using them in the exercises.
第8回Analyzing bivariate data (2)Exercise will be given.
第9回Demographic Statistics (1)Basic concepts of demographic statistics will be explained. This lesson focuses on structural measures of population, such as sex and age composition, educational levels, etc.
第10回Demographic Statistics (2)Basic concepts of dynamic measures of population, such as total fertility rates and life expectancy, will be explained.
第11回Demographic Statistics (3)Methods and main results of population projections will be explained, and students will interpret and discuss the results of population projections.
第12回Price Indices (1)Basic theories and concepts of price indices will be explained, and students will study the historical movements of prices in Japan and other countries.
第13回Price Indices (2)Exercises on price indices will be given, and students will study the characteristics of different index formulae.
第14回Questions and AnswersReview and Overall Discussion
第15回Summary and ConclusionsThe points of 1-14th lessons will be summarized.
授業形式 Lectures will be given in PC room. Students are to solve the exercise questions, and give presentations, using mainly EXCEL.
授業は，パソコン教室でEXCEL等を用いながら進めます。講義，演習，プレゼンテーション等を含めすべて英語で行います。資料作成，演習等を英語で行うことにより，英語での説明能力を高めることを目指します。

テキスト Handouts will be distributed in the classroom. They will also be posted on EcoLink.

事前学習の内容など，学生へのメッセージ Previous learning of statistics is not required. Active participation in exercises is encouraged. Students should also take Economic Statistics II in the 2nd Semester.
理論や手法を学ぶと同時に，日本・世界の経済事情についても学びます。統計学の基礎から指導しますが，EXCELの基礎は予め学んでおいてください。演習や質疑応答に能動的に取り組んでください。後期「Economic Statistics II」も履修してください。
