学習目標(到達目標) This is Part I of Economic Statistics. Here, students will study basic theories and methods, and acquire skills of data analysis and presentation using EXCEL.
本科目は前期・後期と連続しており，前期では，経済統計の基礎的な理論・手法を，Excelを用いて学び，英語での統計分析資料の作成能力を習得します。
授業概要(教育目的) The course teaches descriptive statistics using real demographic and social statistics of Japan and the world. Students will also study current world socio-economic issues through exercises.
前期では，記述統計の手法を学び，世界の人口・社会統計を実際に用いた演習を通じて日本と世界の社会・経済の課題を学びます。

第1回Introduction

Outline of the course will be explained. Students will study basic concepts of statistics.
第2回Univariate Distribution (1)
Basic concepts and measures for describing characteristics of univariate distributions will be introduced Students will study how to use them properly.
第3回Univariate Distribution (2)
Exercises will be given.
第4回Bivariate Distribution (1)
Basic concepts and methods for bivariate analysis, such as scattergrams and correlation coefficients, will be explained.
第5回Bivariate Distribution (2)
Exercises to apply the bivariate analysis methods will be given, using the international statistical databases.
第6回Demograpic Statistics (1)
Basic concepts of demographic statistics will be explained. This lesson focuses on structural measures of population, such as sex and age composition, educational levels, etc.
第7回Demographic Statistics (2)
Basic concepts of dynamic measures of population, such as total fertility rates and life expectancy, will be explained.
第8回Demographic Statistics (3)
Methods of population projection and examples will be explained. Exercise will be given.
第9回Labor Force Statistics (1)
Basic concepts of employment and unemployment will be explained. Students will study the current labor situation of Japan and the world from labor force statistics.
第10回Labor Force Statistics (2)

Exercises on labor force analysis will be given.
第11回Seasonal Adjustment
Basic concepts and methods of seasonal adjustment will be explained. Students will apply them to real time series statistics.
第12回Price Indices (1)
Basic theories and concepts of price indices will be explained, and students will study the historical movements of prices in Japan and other countries.
第13回Price Indices (2)
Exercises on price indices will be given, and students will study the characteristics of different index formulae.
第14回Questions and Answers
Review and Overall Discussion
第15回Summary and Conclusions
The points of 1-14th lessons will be summarized.
授業形式 Lectures will be given in the PC room. Students will work on exercises, and produce reports, using mainly EXCEL.
授業は，パソコン教室でEXCEL等を用いて進めます。講義，演習，資料作成，プレゼンテーション等を含め，原則としてすべて英語で行います。これにより，英語での理解・説明能力を高めることを目指します。

評価の特記事項 Assessment will be based on achievements in classroom exercises and contributions.
テキスト Study materials will be distributed in the classroom. Bring folders and USB memories to store them.

事前学習の内容など，学生へのメッセージ Previous learning of statistics is not required. Active engagement in the classroom is essential. Students should also take Economic Statistics II in the 2nd Semester.
統計学の基礎から解説しますが，EXCELの基礎は予め学んでおいてください。演習の結果は必ず提出してください。後期「Economic Statistics II」も履修してください。授業を通じて，統計分析手法に加えて世界の実情についても理解を深めてください。
