学習目標(到達目標) This course aims to think and discuss the US economic sustainability and future aspects in the global sights throughout the 21st century. This includes some data-based analysis and debates over the US fiscal and monetary policies after 1980's and its effects on the expanding global capitalism.
授業概要(教育目的) We try to consider and examine the US domestic issues; welfare, education, transportation, housing which are operated by state and local governments under the "federalism", and try to have some debates in thinking the globalization and iocome gaps between races or gender.

financial crisis and Sub-Prime Loan
Starting with the American finacial crisis in 2008 and capital markets melt down with Sub-Prime Loan. Discussing about the transparency and government regulations in capital markets. Prepare your introduction and interested area about the US economy.
第2回"Immigrants Nations" and "American Dreams"Trying to discuss; what is "Immigrants Nations" and "American Dreams"? Examining the population structure, race, mobility between regions after twentieth century. Think and examine about the hitorical background of US and the impacts to US labour market in advance.
第3回Immigrants workers as low incomer and high incomerExamining the American historical income class changes, and approaching the income gaps and the reasons from the point of view of the educational attainment. Think about IT immigrant workers and the educational cost and higher education institutions in advance.
第4回1960s Johnson(D) and 1970s Nixson(R) administrationRethinking the Democrats and Republicans economic policies and federal government intervention. Think about the federal roles in education and differences between partisan in advance.
第5回Reagan administration and its government reform and economic theoryRethinking the "Reaganomics" in 1980s, and discussing the failure of the supply-side policies, budget deficits, "Young Report". Think about the general economic effects of tax-cut in advance.
第6回Clinton and Bush Administration ComparisonComparing the features of Clinton and Bush(junior) administration, and discussing the federal government's finacial and monetary policies for each. Examine about the defenition of "New Economy" in 1990s in advance.
第7回Federal governemnt R&D spendings and military-Industry ComplexOverviewing the Federal governemnt's R&D spendings under the Cold War and "Military-Industry Complex". Think about relations between private innovation and military technology in avdance and prepare the short presentation about them.
第8回Patent policy and WTO Discussing the patent policies and attitude toward China in 1990s to 2000s under WTO.
第9回BOEING reform; manufacturing sector's competitivenessThinking a case study for BOEING. We try to examine the Boeing reform action after 2000s by the Japanese company of TOYOTA. Think about the competitiveness of TOYOTA in advance.
第10回US government and free market(1); Federal levelDiscussing the American government of Federal level in Washington DC, politics, Federal law makeing process, vetos, and partisan. Review and examine the definition of "limited government" and the typical economic policies based on it.
第11回US government and free market(2); State levelDiscussing the American Government of state level; a case study of Illinois State. Examine about the "balanced budget" at states and locals.
第12回US government and free market(3); Local levelDiscussing American Government of Local Level; a case study of Chicago City. Check the US Census Bureau websites and data related to the poverty, living area, and educational attainment by race.
第13回US government and free market(4); Education policies and issues as Local levelDiscussing American Government on Education as Local level(school district), a case study of Chicago Public Schools. Review the balanced budget and bond issue system in advance.
第14回Discussion and DebateDiscussing the highlighted points across the whole lecture. Prepare the final presentation and Q&As at discussion.
第15回Final testFinal test

授業形式 This course requests each student to examine the roles of federal and state & local governments and income redistribution policies in the US. We often use the media contents such as PBS "News Hour" to think over the real US economy.
