学習目標(到達目標) In the first term, students will learn how to write paragraphs and short essays in English. Each week they will carry out an assignment on a different topic. In particular, students will focus on expressing and supporting their opinions, and complete a longer academic essay as a final report.
授業概要(教育目的) This class will offer a chance to:
1. write a well-organized paragraph;
2. Write short essays in correct academic English;
3. improve English flow;
4. clearly express critiques and conclusions;
5. work on improving written English;
6. learn citation style;
7. write a research report.

第1回Paragraph writing IPrior learning: Read English paragraphs online and examine how they are organized (60minutes);

Subsequent learning: Listen to a lecture on the structure & format of paragraphs (90 minutes).
第2回Paragraph writing IIPrior Learning: Write a well-organized English paragraph (2 hours);

Subsequent Learning: Listen to a lecture on the 3rd-person focus in academic writing, and the use of titles (90 minutes).
第3回Writing Process I; sample essayPrior Learning: Practice changing active voice to passive voice, and vice versa (60 minutes);

Subsequent Learning: Listen to a lecture and practice narrowing a topic and developing supporting ideas (90 minutes).
第4回Writing Process II; exercisesPrior Learning: Correct badly organized paragraphs (75 Minutes);

Subsequent Learning: Listen to further suggestions about editing and formatting (90 minutes).
第5回comparison/contrast writing I; sample essayPrior Learning: Review a list of sentence connectors, subordinators and phrasal connectors. Practice writing clauses of comparison (80 minutes);

Subsequent: Listen to a lecture on flow in in comparison/contrast writing (90 minutes).
第6回comparison/contrast writing II: exercisesPrior Learning: Practice writing clauses of reason or purpose (75 minutes)

Subsequent Learning: Listen to a lecture and complete activities related to critiques, counter-arguing, this+summary word (90 minutes).
第7回narrative in academic writing; sample essayPrior Learning: Find examples of weak and strong claims online (60 minutes);

Subsequent Learning; Listen to a lecture on hedging and making lists (90 minutes).
第8回narrative in academic writing II; exercisesPrior Learning: Practice inserting punctuation in non-academic writing (60 minutes);

Subsequent Learning Listen to an explanation of, and practice using hyphenation and advanced punctuation (90 minutes)
第9回research reports I; sample essayPrior Learning: Practice the past perfect tense 60 minutes);

Subsequent Learning: Listen to a lecture on advanced passive voice, and past perfect tense.
第10回research reports II; exercisesPrior Learning: Review the influence of Latin, Greek & French on academic English (90 minutes);

Subsequent Learning: Listen to a lecture on and practice vocabulary shifts in academic writing.
第11回defining/classifying I; sample essayPrior Learning: Find several definitions online or in texts from other classes (60 minutes);

Subsequent Learning: Listen to a lecture on informal & formal definitions, and practice making them.
第12回defining/classifying; exercisesPrior Learning: Find two classification systems in the media (75 minutes);

Subsequent Learning: Listen to a lecture on and practice producing classifications
第13回problem/solution I; sample essayPrior Learning: Practice subordination using relative clauses in non-academic English (60 minutes);

Subsequent learning: Listen to a lecture on and practice producing relative clauses in academic English.
第14回problem/solution II; exercisesPrior Learning: Practice expressing results in non-academic English (75 minutes);

Subsequent Learning: Listen to a lecture on and practice producing participial clauses of result in academic English.
第15回1st term summary; review of formats; finding a topicPrior Learning: Choose two report topics (60 minutes);

Subsequent Learning: Listen to an explanation of the 1st term paper writing assignment.
授業形式 a combination of short lectures, in-class exercises, and writing homework and a report.
