学習目標(到達目標) In this term, students will learn e-mail and research writing. After learning to write e-mails of various types, they will plan and implement an original research project, and further write it up as a final report.
授業概要(教育目的) In this class, the goals will be to:
1. continue mastering elements of writing in academic English;
2. write a longer report on original research;
3. use APA style correctly;
4. make a research presentation.

第1回cause/effect writing samplePrior Learning: review the previous term's class if relevant (60 minutes);

Subsequent learning: Read a cause/effect passage silently & out loud. Do a vocabulary-sorting exercise, answer true/false questions and fill out a partially-completed outline to show comprehension (90 minutes).
第2回cause/effect vocabularyPrior Learning: look for cause/effect language online (60 minutes)

Subsequent learning: begin to use cause/effect language.
第3回cause/effect writing practicePrior Learning: read some sample sentences with cause/effect language (45 minutes);

Subsequent Learning: use advanced cause/effect vocabulary (90 minutes)
第4回cause/effect in history of technologyPrior learning: read a cause/effect passage on technological development (60 minutes);

Subsequent Learning: pick out new words from passage, focus on general technological vocabulary, find meanings from context (90 minutes).
第5回alternative explanations for causes and effectsPrior learning; read alternative explanation for passage in the text (75 minutes);

Subsequent Learning: fill in the gaps in a text with cause/effect vocabulary (90 minutes).
第6回Research reports I: quotations, citations and referencesPrior Learning: review relevant section from passages in the text (60 minutes)

Subsequent Learning: listen to a lecture on APA style (90 minutes).
第7回Research reports II: making a reference listPrior Learning: review the previous weeks' lecture (60 minutes);

Subsequent Learning: given a variety a publications, create a reference list using APA format (90 minutes).
第8回Research reports III: general organization Prior Learning: read introductions and conclusions from research papers online (75 minutes);

Subsequent Learning: listen to a lecture on research into how report introductions and conclusions are commonly written (90 minutes).
第9回Research reports IV; results sectionsPrior Learning: return online, look at results sections (90 minutes);

Subsequent Learning: listen to lecture on common elements of the methods section (90 minutes)
第10回Research reports V; language of discussion sectionsPrior Learning: return online once more, look at discussion sections (90 minutes);

Subsequent Learning: listen to a lecture on common elements of discussion sections (90 minutes)
第11回e-mail stylePrior learning: e-mail instructor a rough draft of the report (2 hours)

Subsequent Learning: listen to lecture on e-mail do's and don'ts (90 minutes)
第12回Presenting research I; organizationPrior Learning: listen to a report presentation on YouTube (45 minutes)

Subsequent Learning: Listen to a lecture on presentation organization principles, and practice them in an impromptu speech (90 minutes)
第13回Presenting research II; deliveryPrior Learning: listen to previous Youtube report presentation again, focusing on physical delivery (45 minutes);

Subsequent Learning: listen to a lecture on aspects of presentation delivery and practice them in an impromptu speech (90 minutes).
第14回Presenting research III: speech modesPrior Learning: reflect on previous presentations and their delivery modes (45 minutes).

Listen to a lecture on and view examples of presentation modes; impromptu, manuscript, memorized, impromptu (90 minutes)
第15回Report presentationsPrior Learning: revise report draft, prepare a report presentation (2 hours)

Subsequent Learning: deliver and receive feedback on report presentations (90 minutes)
