学習目標(到達目標) In this class, students will discuss a variety of issues in English and write three position papers on some of those issues. This will form the basis of an Argument and Debate type of atmosphere. DC & CP: 2,6,8
授業概要(教育目的) This class will allow those who take it:
1. to be able to write about important world issues;
2. to develop skills for reading, discussion, presentation and researching in English;
3. to expand their academic English vocabular

第1回Intro to the class.Explanation of the syllabus, the text and class prep strategies (45 minutes). Practice using the language of discussion. Each unit has vocabulary following the presentation in the textbook under the heading Notes. The English words come with an explanation in Japanese.
第2回1st discussion topic: Unit 1 What's So Funny? Do the exercises. Then, discuss why humor is a funny thing. Pages 2-6.
第3回2nd discussion topic: Unit 6 What's Romantic Love got to do with it?Do the exercises. Then, discuss what a perfect partner is. Pages 27-31.
第4回3rd discussion topic: Unit 9 A Star is Born.Do the exercises. Then, discuss why there is an international agreement that states that no country may claim ownership of a planet or star, but it says nothing about individuals. Pages 42-46.
第5回4th discussion topic: Unit 11 The Movements of Robots.Do the exercises. Then, discuss how robots can extend their help even further. Pages 52-56.
第6回5th discussion topic: Unit 13 Hair Today---Gone Tomorrow.Do the exercises. Then discuss what other ways a person can express one's personal freedom. Pages 62-66.
第7回6th discussion topic: Unit 16 Boys Will Be Boys.Do the exercises. Then discuss how Girls Will Be Girls. Pages 77-81.
第8回7th discussion topic: Unit 19 Who Cut The Cheese?:Do the exercises. Then, discuss clean water, fresh air and climate change. Pages 92-96.
第9回8th discussion topic: Unit 21 Talk to the Animals.Do the exercises. Then discuss how certain animals behave in both a good and bad way. Pages 102-106.
第10回9th discussion topic: Unit 22 Hey Good Lookin'.Do the exercises. Then, discuss how you would describe a woman's and man's attractive physical and mental appearance. Pages 107-111.
第11回10th discussion topic: Unit 2 Eureka---I Have Found It!Do the exercises. Then, discuss inventions and how they were discovered/invented. Pages 7-11.
第12回11th discussion topic: Unit 3 The Super Rich. Do the exercises. Then, discuss who some of the richest people are and tell how they made their money. Pages 12-16.
第13回12th discussion topic. Unit 8 Bad Guys. Do the exercises. Then, discuss the criminals among us. Pages 37-41.
第14回13th discussion topic. Unit 12 Piracy.Do the exercises. Then, discuss the illegal practice of buying and selling counterfeit goods. Pages 57-61.
第15回Make presentations.Receive feedback. Listen to summary of the class content.
