学習目標(到達目標) This course will focus on the experiences of Japanese people who went overseas from 1800-1950.

Students will be better able to
a) understand modern history
b) understand cross-cultural communication
c) discuss their ideas

授業概要(教育目的) We will understand and analyse various sources such as texts, art, photography and movie clips. Students will discuss and reflect on what we learn. Finally, students will present their research on Japanese people who travelled overseas.

第1回Course introductionWe will introduce ourselves and the course outline.

第2回What is history? We will discuss student experiences of studying history, and consider some famous ideas about history. We will create a timeline of important events in Japan’s interactions with other countries.

第3回A closed country? Sakoku and overseas knowledgeStarting before our period of focus, we will analyse how much interaction Japan had with other countries before the Meiji period.

第4回The Bakumatsu period and the Choshu FiveWhy did five young men risk their lives to leave Japan when it was still illegal? What effects did this have on Japan?

授業形式 Reading and background research should be done before class. Classwork will include discussion, lectures, reflective writing and presentations.
