学習目標(到達目標) This course will focus on the experiences of non-Japanese people who came to Japan from 1800-1950.

授業概要(教育目的) We will understand and analyse various sources such as texts, art, photography and movie clips. Students will discuss and reflect on what we learn. Finally, students will present their research on individuals who travelled to Japan.

第2回Ernest Satow and the Namamugi IncidentShortly after Yokohama opened to foreign visitors, a British man was killed by samurai (called the Namamugi Incident). Why did this happen, and how could it have been avoided? We will read the opinion of Ernest Satow, a British diplomat in Japan.
