学習目標(到達目標) This course is designed to achieve below listed goals: Students can 1)explain the theory of European integration and of the European Monetary Union. 2) understand the process of the financial and economic crisis. 3) describe the structure of regional inequalities in the EU.
授業概要(教育目的) The goal of this course is that students
1) can understand the multi-layered structure of the EU economy,
2) can discuss the pros and cons of the EU economic and financial integration.

第1回Guidance1) Self-introduction.
2) Textbook and Course Evaluation will be explained.
3) General knowledge of the EU will be discussed.
第2回 Economic Integration and the World.1) General definition of economic integration and the dramatic increase of regional economic integration since the 90's, 2) Current regional economic integration worldwide and its relationship with WTO rules, will be explained.

第3回Theory of Economic Integration1) Each stage of economic integration (FTA/EPA, Customs Union, Common Market) will be explained.
2)History of EU towards single market will be summarized.

第4回Post-war monetary systemAfter Bretton Woods international monetary system and its relation ship with the European economy will be explained.

第5回European Monetary Union: (1) the theoryThe concepts of monetary integration and its gains and losses will be discussed.

第6回European Monetary Union: (2) Dollar and the European Economy1) Monetary speculation between Dollar and European currency, especially Deutsche Mark, and its impacts on the European economy
2) The Snake in the tunnel,
will be explained.

第8回EU Enlargement: 2004 to the present1) History of the EU enlargement,
2) Impacts and dynamics of 2004 middle and Eastern European countries' accession will be discussed.

第9回The Financial Market and the euroThe history of EU financial market integration and changes of market participants behaviour will be explained.

第10回Regional inequalities in the EU1) Regional disparities within the EU and the causes

第11回The Eurozone in Crisis: (1) The Global Financial Crisis 1) The economic bubble & burst of the US
2) EU financial institutions and the US economic bubble
will be explained.

第12回The Eurozone in Crisis: (2) The Public Debt Crisis in the EurozonePublic debt crisis in eurozone: Greece to GIIPS will be explained.

第13回Exit from the CrisisThe EU policy reactions to the eurozone crisis: its effectiveness and limits will be explained.

第14回The UK and the EUThe background of the UK national's decision to leave the EU and the challenges both the UK and the EU would face will be discussed.

第15回EU-Japan EPAThe impacts of Japan-EU Economic Partnership Agreement will be explained.
[Required preparation:] Read assigned materials.
授業形式 This course mainy consists of lectures but partly with in-class discussions. Students are expected to read the assigned chapter and related materials prior to the class and present their ideas.
