Message from the Director of the Institute of Business Research

The Institute of Business Research, Nihon University College of Economics, was founded as "The Institute of Tax Law" in 1954. In 1977, the institute was reorganized and given its current name in order to stimulate and encourage research activities of the faculty members belonging mainly to the Industrial Management Department of the College of Economics. Since then our institute has conducted a broad spectrum of empirical research and surveys focusing on business, management and accounting. In October 2014, we held a symposium to commemorate the institute's 60th anniversary, once again affirming the importance of academic contributions to society.

Along with research projects carried out by the research group mainly consisting of the College of Economics faculty members, our institute hosts lectures and seminars by researchers and experts from the field of business and management from outside of our university. These research results and lectures are open not only to researchers and students but to the general public too, and have been highly appraised as contributions that shed light on trends and distinctive characteristics of various industries in Japan, as well as on problems that beset them.

At present, we invite research projects in three fields: 1. research related to business trends surveys, 2. collaborative research between academia and industry, and 3. general business management, and every year select two topics from these fields. In recent years, the selected projects have treated topics such as corporate recruitment and training of employees, public accounting reform, ethical climate in corporate organizations, big data, industrial policies and economic welfare, as well as development and reeducation of entrepreneurs.

I believe that the research projects carried out by our institute are of much significance not just to the academia, but to the business community, too. In today's world, where doubts regarding globalization seem to be gushing, there is a need in all segments of society to calmly examine the future direction of industries and corporations. I hope the fruits of our work can meet such demands by society.
